First 5 San Diego

The first five years of life are critical to a child's development. These years shape a child's success in school and in life. First 5 San Diego educates and helps parents and others help children during these early years. Its goal is to help ensure that every child in San Diego County enters school ready to succeed.
The First 5 Commission of San Diego County leads the San Diego community in promoting the vital importance of the first 5 years of life to the well-being of children, families and society. The Commission conducts its mission through these key functions:
- Funding services and activities to achieve desired results.
- Advocating for policy change at local and state levels.
- Acting as a catalyst and leader for coordinating, integrating and leveraging existing resources.
- Building community and organizational capacity to support families.

First 5 San Diego & 2-1-1 San Diego
For the past seven fiscal years, 2-1-1 San Diego has partnered with First 5 Commission of San Diego (First 5) to support an information and referral (I&R) system that serves the needs of families with children under 6 years of age as well as pregnant women.
It is the agency's goal to assist First 5 in increasing the delivery of services that accurately fit their program demographic. In addition to screening every client for potential First 5 program eligibility, 2-1-1 San Diego provides information on First 5 funded programs like access to health care, healthy development, school readiness, parent education, and oral health programs. As a principle funder and key customer, First 5 enables 2-1-1 to successfully provide thousands of San Diegans with the help they need. The Commission has just completed its 5-year Strategic Plan (2010-2015) which notes their second key strategy as "Information and referral efforts that link pregnant women and families to local service resources."
During the 2009 fiscal year, 37,385 callers identified as having a child under the age of six or a pregnant woman in the home. Each year, 2-1-1 San Diego works with First 5 to modify its intake process and evaluation component to ensure the agency is meeting the needs of these families.
We are grateful to our partners and are always looking for new ways to utilize our connections to expand our information base. If you would like to learn more about our partnerships, please contact Meg Storer, Chief of Staff, at mstorer@211sandiego.org or (858) 300-1240.
