About Foster Grandparent Program

Provides an adult-child relationship-building program for older adults and special and exceptional needs children who need one-to-one attention, academic tutoring, mentoring, and nurturing support. Foster grandparents receive the following benefits as part of the program: reimbursement stipend, transportation allowance, one meal while volunteering, accident insurance, and special training relevant to their volunteer position and being a senior in San Diego County. They do not go into private homes. The program serves all of San Diego County.

  • Eligibility: Foster grandparents must be 60 years and older, low-income, pass an annual physical examination, be able to volunteer 20 hours per week (4 hours/5 days), able to accept supervision, and enjoy children.
  • Fees: No fees charged.
  • Intake: Phone for appointment to complete an application. If requirements met, applicant will be called for an interview. After selection, applicant must have a physical examination and orientation training before being placed as a foster grandparent. Fingerprints may be requested under California State Law.
