About Section 8 Rental Assistance/Public Housing
The Rental Subsidy/Voucher program (Section 8) is a rent supplement program for disabled individuals, senior citizens, and other low-income persons and families. They may pay 30% or more of their income for rent while residing in privately owned apartments. The Public Housing Program provides rental housing owned, managed, and maintained by the Housing Commission and rented to low- or moderate-income families and senior/disabled citizens. Eligible persons pay no more than 30% of their income for rent.

- Eligibility: Section 8 and public housing eligibility based on family size and income (must earn less than 80% of the San Diego Median Area Income). Those eligible include low-income, the disabled, people older than 62 years of age, veterans, individuals displaced by government action, and homeless individuals.
- Fees: No fees charged.
- Intake: Applications may be completed online at www.sdhc.net, or they can be picked up at the Housing Commission's office at 1122 Broadway, Ste 300 or at any City Community Service Centers (call 619-236-5555 for locations).
